The 2017 Newbery Award winners were announced last month and we thought it was time we shared that information on our own site.
This year’s winner was The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. This book of magical realism follows the story of the Protectorate, their beliefs about the “evil witch in the forest” and the true nature of that witch. Themes include love and sacrifice. We feel certain there are many parallels to be made between this and other classic fairy tales involving good vs evil, love, and even magic. You might even be able to make parallel connections with a book we earlier reviewed, The Underneath, which also has tones of magical realism.
Three books, all of which fall into the Historical Fiction genre, were listed as “Newbery Honor” books:
